The heat is on, and so must be your ability to recognize the dangers. The summer months are here, meaning it’s time to pay more attention to your body.
Sometimes individuals with diabetes have certain complications, including nerve and blood vessel damage which can affect sweat glands. This makes it harder for the body to cool down and could lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Staying hydrated is important because not drinking enough liquids can increase blood sugar and cause more urination.
Even if you’re not thirsty, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can increase blood sugar levels. When dressing for the day, wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. It’s very important to keep diabetes medicines, supplies, and equipment in a cool place and out of the sun. Central Florida Health Care provider Karla Bonetti says, “The summer is meant to be enjoyed! If you are going to spend time outside, make sure to wear sunscreen. Avoid being outside when the sun is shining the brightest, around noon. In addition, try to find ways to relax and wind down in your free time.”
Although it’s important to drink water, you can also stay hydrated by eating certain fruits. Watermelon, strawberry, cantaloupe, and grapefruit can help you stay hydrated. Simply eating these water-rich fruits will allow you to stay hydrated. In addition, adding cucumbers or lemon to your water can give it an extra flavor. Trying new smoothie recipes can be fun to ensure you stay hydrated this summer. Remember, Central Florida Health Care has your best health at heart and we want you to stay safe!
