Understanding Rheumatology: Why It Matters for Your Health

When you hear the term rheumatology, you might think of joint pain—but this medical specialty goes beyond that. Rheumatology diagnoses and treats autoimmune, degenerative, and inflammatory conditions that can affect joints, muscles, and connective tissues throughout the body.

Kavita Khorran, PA-C, MPH, treats patients in Central Florida Health Care’s Mulberry Health Center. She says it’s important to see a rheumatologist early because many rheumatologic conditions can cause irreversible damage if left untreated. A rheumatologist offers targeted treatment approaches that not only relieve symptoms but also prevent disability and slow disease progression.

Rheumatologists manage a wide range of disorders, including:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Gout
  • Lupus (SLE)
  • Vasculitis
  • Psoriatic Arthritis
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Myositis
  • Osteoporosis

Khorran says most rheumatic diseases are chronic, requiring long-term care, medication management, with frequent lab monitoring and routine visits. Treatments include:

  • DMARDs (Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs)
  • Biologics targeting specific inflammatory pathways
  • Advanced therapies such as subcutaneous injections or IV infusions

Diagnosis isn’t based on lab work alone. Rheumatologists use blood tests, imaging (X-rays, MRI, Ultrasound) and clinical criteria. Sometimes, abnormal labs without symptoms may only require monitoring rather than aggressive treatment.

Consider seeing a rheumatologist if you experience:

  • Persistent joint pain or swelling lasting several weeks
  • Sudden, unexplained muscle pain or weakness
  • Tender, warm, or swollen joints
  • Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes
  • Fatigue, fever, or weight loss with joint symptoms
  • Facial rashes or rashes on sun-exposed areas
  • Mouth or nasal ulcers

If you notice these symptoms, don’t wait. Early intervention can make all the difference. Schedule an appointment to meet with one of our rheumatology providers by calling 866.234.8534. We’re ready to help you live your healthiest life.
