Central Florida Health Care is deeply committed to the well-being of its senior patients, exemplified by the expertise of Devashis Mitra, MD, DM (PHD), CFHC’s first rheumatologist practicing at the Mulberry Health Center. Dr. Mitra, a leading authority in rheumatology, shares that from his perspective, the two most prevalent conditions among seniors are osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. In addition, older patients also tend to experience more episodes of tendinitis, bursitis, and ligament strains.
Dr. Mitra explains that osteoarthritis, a joint condition, and osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones, can significantly diminish the quality of life. These conditions, which come in three types, can cause inflammation, joint damage, pain, muscle spasms, and loss of function, all of which can severely disrupt daily activities.
No one wants to live with pain and discomfort, but thankfully, there are treatment options to help you stay active without suffering. Dr. Mitra says we traditionally use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants to relieve inflammation and muscle spasms, albeit we are careful when using muscle relaxants in elderly patients. If there is considerable inflammation-related damage, we also use medications to treat rheumatoid arthritis, such as hydroxychloroquine, methotrexate, etc., depending on the need.
For osteoporosis, there are preventive measures as well as treatment options. It’s essential to take calcium and vitamin D on a regular basis to keep your bones strong. Getting a fracture at an older age, mainly asymptomatic fractures, can lead to stooped postures and hip fractures that potentially cause patients to become bedridden and lose quality of life.
Dr. Mitra’s approach to treatment is not just about managing symptoms but about addressing the root cause to enhance quality of life. His goal is to empower patients to maintain their independence and continue doing the things they love. Central Florida Health Care supports you every step on your journey to better health!
